Sensible Smita
Is it all about faulty bringing up? What comes to my mind is that Smita wanted independant environment with her husband unlike the forced one from her father. While Kannan was also brought up in a strict environment hence may have struggled with himself avoiding to implement the same at his own home but failed and resorted to self-destruction.
That's why may be Smita had nothing much but independance in her current situation to live against all odds.
